About 'Down the Mother's Track'
Down the Mother’s track was born out of a trip to the Selby Community House to meet with Aboriginal women who were elders of their clan.
It was many years ago now and my memory of events is sketchy but not the feelings.
There was a group of us European Australian women who had all become close when we were all apart of a local trading system called the L.E.T.S. and we invited the elders to come and give us a talk.
We all sat quietly and listened and it was quite moving experience.
When I went home, there was this feeling of dignity that lingered on my mind. With everything that our Indigenous family have been through I could not believe the strength that eminated from these women.
I hope the song captures that feeling – of power, of determination, of self reliance…
Lyrics
There’s bread on the table
Money in a jar
You didn’t call from Kalgoorlie
Maybe you didn’t get that far
In a world of compromises
This one’s going to mar
Life’s more than bread on the table
and money in a jar.
I’m gonna walk walk walk down the mother track
There’s lipstick and linoleum
and valentine cards
and the honeymoons over
Like a shooting star turns to dark
Now I can’t stop from crying
Where did I miss my mark
Life’s more than lipstick and linoleum
and valentine cards
I’m gonna walk walk walk down the mothers track
With the dignity of freedom
I ain’t never coming back
I’m gonna walk walk walk down the mother’s track.
